I was born in the United States, but I have also lived in Israel, France, Germany, and Japan.
I love learning languages. When I plan to go and live in a country, I always try to learn the basic grammar of the language before going there. That way, I have a language foundation on which I can build. Knowing a bit of the language makes it easier and more fun when I meet people. One thing I don’t do is learn about the country’s history. The reason for this is that history is usually someone’s opinion or perspective. Very often, it’s a negative perspective. I don’t think it’s a good idea to go to a new country with a negative perspective. It’s always fun to discover what the people are like by learning their language, talking to them, and living and working alongside them in their town.

Before coming to Japan, I studied Japanese intensively for one year. When I got here, I didn’t really know anything about the Japanese people. I came to Japan as an English teaching ALT at a junior high school in Kawaguchi, Saitama. On the first day of school, one of the teachers in the teachers’ room pointed to a chair and said, “Please shit here.” In Japanese that means, “Koko de unko shite kudasai.” I was a little shocked, but tried not to show it because everyone was smiling at me. I wasn’t sure what to do and waited to see what the other teachers were going to do. In my mind, I was wondering whether ‘unko suru koto’ was a tradition at Japanese schools on the first day. When I saw everyone just ‘sit’ in their chairs, I realized that the teacher didn’t want me to ‘shit’ but ‘sit’. I made a mental note that I will need to help my Japanese students with their pronunciation.

私はアメリカで産まれましたが、イスラエル、フランス、ドイツ、そして日本でも生活してきました。
言語を学ぶのがとても好きです。他国へ移住する計画をする時、そこへ行く前に、いつも言語の基本的な文法を身に付けるようにしていました。
その方法で、言語を組み立てる土台を得られます。
少しの言語を知っているのは、人との出会いを容易で、もっと楽しいものにします。
一つ、私がしない事は、その国の歴史を学ぶことです。
その理由は、歴史は一般的に誰かの意見や考えだからです。
ごく稀に、それは否定的な見方だったりします。
否定的な見方で、新しい国へ行くのは良い考えとは思いません。
言語を学ぶことによって、どんな人々か発見すること、彼らと話すこと、生活すること、そして彼らの街で一緒に働くことはいつも楽しいことなのです。

日本へ来る前に、私は１年間、集中して日本語を勉強しました。
ここに来たとき、日本人についてほとんど何も知りませんでした。
埼玉県川口市の中学校で英語を教えるALT講師として日本へ来ました。
学校の初日に、職員室で先生のひとりが椅子を指差して言いました。「ここでshitしてください」
日本語で、それは「ここで💩してください」という意味です。
私は少しショックを受けましたが、それを知られないようにしました。
なぜならば、皆さん私に微笑んでいたからです。
私はどうしたらよいのかよく分からずに、他の先生方がどうするのか見たくて待っていました。
頭の中では、日本の学校の初日には‛💩すること’が伝統なのかどうか悩んでいました。
皆さんが椅子にただ‛座る’のを見たときに、その先生が私に‛shit＝💩’ではなく、
‛sit=座る’して欲しかったのだと分かりました。
私は、日本の生徒たちの発音を、助ける必要があると、強く感じました。
