When people in Japan see me using chopsticks, they often say to me, “Ohashi jouzu desu ne.”
I come from a family of six children. My father always took us out to Chinese restaurants because he loved Chinese food. To make sure that all of us children ate slowly, my father had a rule that we all had to follow if we wanted to eat. We all had to use chopsticks while eating. So, I learned to use chopsticks as a little boy, just like most Japanese children. All my brothers and sisters can use chopsticks just like all children in Asia even though we aren’t Asian. So, if you see an American using chopsticks well, you can be sure that they ate a lot of Chinese food when they were young.
